SCRUM PRINCIPLES

* Ideally provided as a follow-on to “Human Centered Design Thinking”, but not required.

Scrum Principles is a dynamic, experiential 2-day workshop (in-person or virtual) crafted to introduce government and military teams to the Scrum framework within their unique mission-driven contexts. Developed and delivered by instructors certified through Centers for Adaptive Warfighting, Naval X, this course guides intact teams through Scrum’s core values, roles (such as Product Owner, Scrum Master, Development Team), artifacts (like Product Backlog), and events (Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Retrospective).
Participants learn how to apply iterative, value-driven approaches—focusing on delivering usable increments, fostering collaboration, and embracing change—to accelerate mission outcomes. Through team-based simulations and breakout sessions (6–10 per team), participants practice designing a sprint, holding stand-ups, iterating backlog items, and reflecting for continuous improvement—all tailored to the constraints and structures of government work.

Ideally for cohesive teams with leadership present.

Course Objectives/Outcomes:

By course end, participants will be able to:

Describe Scrum’s foundational values, roles, events, and artifacts and their purpose within agile delivery.
Create and prioritize a Product Backlog tailored to mission-focused initiatives.
Plan and execute a Sprint cycle that includes Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, and Sprint Review.
Conduct Sprint Retrospectives to identify improvements and enhance team performance.
Adjust backlog and sprint activities based on stakeholder feedback and evolving requirements.
Embed Scrum routines into their current workflows to support transparency, accountability, and iterative progress.

Target Audience: This course is ideal for teams—especially those who participated in Human Centered Design Thinking but also effective as a standalone training.  Teams should consist of 6–10 individuals, including leadership presence, and be ready to practice Scrum in realistic breakout simulations.  Ideal for public-sector product owners, project leads, operational teams, and those tasked with delivering iterative solutions or improving program responsiveness. The structure is intentionally designed to respect government oversight and deliver agile adaptability in service of mission success.
